Ernest Weston, Jr - Tribal Economic Development Representative, EDA
Ernest Weston, Jr. is a dedicated Tribal Economic Development professional with extensive experience in advancing economic growth and self-sufficiency for Indigenous communities. Currently serving as a Tribal Economic Development Representative for the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) Denver Regional Office, Weston plays a pivotal role in promoting the Economic Development Administrations funding programs and supporting over 34 tribal communities within the Denver ten-state region. Weston has been instrumental in managing high-impact projects, ensuring compliance, and fostering partnerships with Tribal Nations, Tribal Associations, and Indigenous communities.
Prior to joining the EDA, Weston was the Program Director at the Oglala Sioux Tribe Planning Office, where they spearheaded the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) development and managed significant projects like the 2.5 GHz Spectrum Project for the Pine Ridge Reservation. Weston successfully established the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s telecommunications project and led initiatives to enhance capacity building, agricultural and economic development on the reservation.
Weston's career is marked by a commitment to tribal development, innovative problem-solving, and a deep understanding of both the cultural and economic needs of Indigenous communities. Their work continues to drive meaningful progress and foster sustainable growth across diverse tribal and federal initiatives.
When not on the road, Weston meets with Tribal representatives virtually, giving them a space to discuss their need and issues. He recently helped the regional team initiate a Tribal coffee hour for just that purpose, fostering a sense of community among Tribal grantees as well. The group meets on the first Wednesday of every month, creating a support network while fostering opportunities for Inter-Tribal commerce. According to Weston, attendees are excited to provide updates on the status of their projects.
When not at work, Weston enjoys spending time with his family at their home on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the town of Pine Ridge. It’s close to where he grew up in the nearby Porcupine District, as a member of the Brotherhood Community. He also loves the outdoors and spending time with a good book.
“If I get the opportunity to spend time doing projects or chores outside, I take that opportunity. I love to read and enjoy a good insightful or thought-provoking book that allows me to keep my mind sharp.”
