The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA)’s Branch of Tribal Climate Resilience (TCR) will begin accepting applications for the FY 2024 Annual Awards Program starting July 17, 2024. The program will support federally recognized Tribes and Tribal organizations as they address current and future climate change impacts on Tribal Treaty and Trust resources, economies, regenerative agriculture, food sovereignty, conservation practices, infrastructure, and human health and safety. All 2024 award applications must be submitted online by October 18, 2024.

This year, over $120 million will be made available in grants to federally recognized Tribes and Tribal organizations to fund climate resilience project planning and implementation. The funding is made possible through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). The IRA also created Clean Energy Tax Credits for Tribal Governments, Alaska Native Corporations, Tax-Exempt Organizations and Individuals.

Funding Categories

  1. Category 1: Planning ($250,000 maximum)

  2. Category 2: Implementation ($4,000,000 maximum)

  3. Category 3: Relocation, Managed Retreat, Protect-in-Place (RMP) Staff $150,000 per year for up to three years maximum)

The funding can go to a wide range of projects such as: biodiversity, cultural resources/Indigenous knowledge, energy, infrastructure, habitat or ecosystem restoration, human health and wellness, wildland fire, youth engagement, and more.
